Moving Forward on Real ID

February 26th, 2009 by Kenneth Burns

Annapolis is moving forward on requiring proof of citizenship for a Maryland drivers license, much to the shergrin of those who had “hope” in the federal government as far as doing a “change” in policy.

The Baltimore Sun reporting this morning that Governor Martin O’Malley (D) made the call to the general assembly yesterday.  This comes after O’Malley talked with his counterparts from across the country.  It seemed that everyone was holding out for the fed to reverse course on President Bush’s Real ID act in 2005.

If this story sounds like a repeat…it kind of is.  Last January, it was reported that licenses would require proof of citizenship starting in 2010.  O’Malley at the time said that the state would “reluctantly” do so.
