Trade Union – An Overview of the Movement

A trade union comprises a group of workers, which speaks for the workers and submits proposals to the management of a company for improved working conditions. It is also considered a bargaining forum for employees, where disputes are settled through negotiations with employers. The subject of negotiation includes wage revisions, working conditions related to security and other benefits of workers such as promotions and so on.

The trade union movement originated during the industrial revolution in Europe, due to the predominance of one sided power of the employer, which was visible in the poor conditions of workers in industries due to meager payment and maltreatment. The movement has developed into larger following with different standards in different wings of trade and industry, but with the sole idea for the improvement of working class.

It is a process of collective bargaining, which has reached every sector of employment today, whereby employees’ work conditions are discussed with them in a regular manner by most of the companies that involve huge workforce by recognizing the union rights.

The membership of a trade union provides support with necessary legal guidance and all other allied benefits to a worker in the modern time. There is the provision of state laws, which give the right to join a trade-union membership by an employee for certain advantages.

We also see horrible consequences when employees insist to on going to strike as negotiations fail. Activities are backed by different political parties to gain the political objectives and they send their representatives through elections with the support of the unions. It is the larger voice that is regarded as a strong force, which is heard properly at the highest levels of management to bring solace to affected employees.

Now, different unions join hands and campaign nationwide on an issue, which may be of greater importance than merely the development of working conditions of employees.

Trade Union Movement In India
Trade union..a well used term used to denote a group of workers standing in a collective manner to fight for their rights. Having a leader who represents them and work in the way to protect and promote their interest. The more no. of people join it..the more stronger it will become..both physically and financially.
Establishment of trade union was not an overnight procedure, but it was a long term procedure. The form and status that trade union does have today is the result of its long term historical background. According to provisional statistics from the Ministry of Labour, trade unions had a combined membership of 24,601,589 in 2002. As of 2008, there are 11 Central Trade Union Organisations (CTUO) recognised by the Ministry of Labour
The trade union movement started in India due to the state intervention for the demand of improved working conditions. The economic reforms’ package based on privatization, liberalization and austerity measures can be viewed as providing some kind of favourable environment for the trade unions in the public sector to engage in greater industrial disputes, but what is being observed is that there is increasing dissension or fragmentation within the trade union movement itself. Though, Trade Union movement emerged due to the need of improved working conditions of the working class in India, there has also been a decline in trade union activities over the years.
The Trade Union is a continuous demand of the wage earners for the purpose of maintaining or improving the working conditions. Political motivations and the ideologies influenced the Indian trade’s union movement and were in turn influenced by its increased strength. The twin aspects of the Indian Trade Union Movement, labours organization for industrial bargaining and its ideological orientation were analyzed with the political colour.
Starting with forceful establishment of trade unions in Indian textile industry and later in jute industry compelled government to form a commission to investigate into the factory condition and also to the working condition of the labours. This gave impetus to the trade union movement in British India got an impetus when Bombay Mill Hands Association was formed for the first time in India on 24 April 1890. The period from 1924 to 1935 can be considered as the era of revolutionary trade union movement.
Later the First World War and its consequences brought a period of soaring prices, unprecedented exploitation for the industrialists but miserably low wages for the workers. The setting up of a League of Nation’s Agency (ILO) gave an international colour to the labour problem.
In India the Trade Union movement is generally divided on political lines. As the environment supported the trade union movement from time to time, a no. of trade union came into existence. AITUC (all india trade union congress) was the earliest trade union body which was established under Lala Lajpat Rai as President, in 1920.this body represented the workers to government and the ILO. The division in AITUC led to formation of a number of various other tade unions. INTUC (Indian national trade union congress), CITU (centre of Indian trade union), HMS(hind majdoor sabha)..etc, were established from time to time.
This movement have provided an impetus to workers to work together for their own favour rather than to be exploited to death.
